I have the mottled Javas from Dr. Albert McGraws son Keeven. I started with a yellow leg rooster and a yellow leg hen. Rooster had nice frame and color. Female was old but laid well. All offspring have dark legs. Pulletts laid light cream colored eggs. I'm thinking of getting birds/chicks from Urch/Turland hatchery. I'm told that his birds lay a dark brown egg. That is what I'm looking for. Also want birds with good weight. Would like to see roosters reach the standard weight of 9lbs. So far I've not found those but I'm just beginning to raise these chickens. Eventually I'd like to raise both the black and mottled. Someone familiar with Duane Urch birds told me the Blk are bigger and lay better. Do you have experience with these strains. Any information you could share would be greatly appreciated. I will try and get some of my pictures loaded to you in the next couple of weeks.

I have only mottled javas from Ellen Rockenstock. They are still growing. I suspect that Duane has quality birds because everyone speaks highly of him. Most of the photos I have posted with Black Javas on the site are from Duane Urch, that someone in are club owns. I think these birds are only 4 months and they look pretty big. I have ordered eggs from him. They are 2 dollars each. I got a dozen of each. Its too cold to send chicks to Texas now. But eggs will do well. My mottleds from Ellen look like they will be good size. Thats what I want to breed are 9 pound cockerals, just cull and keep the big ones and in a few years you will have them.

The hatching eggs you received from Urch, are they a dark brown or more of a cream color? I live in Alabama and will likely order chicks to be delivered in early March. If those turn out to be heavier and lay a darker egg, I may chose to keep those as breeders vs the McGraw strain. Dr. McGraw kept a "closed" flock but his son did tell me his dad used Black Australorp and Black Java males when his birds became too inbred. So I'm not sure how "pure" my birds actually are. they do show good type and color so I'm not obsessed that they be 100%. I do prefer the yellow shanks on the mottled variety. Mine did not show this trait in last years breeding. I only have two pens, one for breeding and one for layers. all of the chickens I currently have are mottled javas so i don't have to worry about getting birds or eggs mixed up.

Do your mottled Javas have good mottling?? I would like to see some pics of your mottleds to compare to mine. Mine have the blotchy legs. look on the web site at the mottled pics those are my birds from Ellen Rockenstock. I have not received the eggs from Urch yet. I think i will wait awhile because of all this cold weather.

I would have to say that my favorite color would have to be Black.

I am going to get some Mottled Javas but, I saw the "Auburn" color on the Java website. That would definitely be another color I would want in my yard.
Are the Auburns available anywhere yet?
